How to start working out: beginners' guide

Exercise is such an important part of living a healthy lifestyle, so we’re here to help you get moving. But, fitting exercise into your routine takes determination, discipline and organisation. If you do not know where to start on your exercise journey, read on for our top tips.

Why exercise?

Regular exercise has been shown to have significant benefits for your health. More than just assisting with maintaining muscle mass, a healthy weight and reducing the risk of lifestyle-related diseases, exercise is good for your mental health. Research shows that exercise can boost our mood, help you sleep more soundly and improve energy levels.

Different types of exercise

Here at CrossFit Play, we offer a holistic program that is guaranteed to get you fit. Our program combines many different types of exercise to help you become a well-rounded, healthy athlete. The types of exercise we use include:

  • Aerobic - commonly called ‘cardio’, aerobic exercise improves your cardiovascular health and endurance. We program running, calories on bikes and rowers, burpees and more to help ensure you get your sweat on in every workout to improve your aerobic performance.

  • Strength - essential for building power, CrossFit training incorporates strength into everything that we do. We use barbell movements, including power and olympic lifts, as well as dumbbells, kettlebells and your own bodyweight to build strength.

  • Stability and flexibility - being mobile and coordinated is so important to stay injury free and reach your maximum potential. All of our warm ups and drills are designed to improve these factors and get you ready to hit the workout of the day with intensity.

How to get started on your fitness journey

  1. Check in with your healthcare provider and get a physical examination done. This will ensure any health problems or conditions that could make you more prone to injury are identified and strategies put in place.

  2. Make a plan and set goals. Here at CrossFit Play, we do the programming and provide qualified, experienced coaches to help you get the most out of your workout. All you need to do is make a plan for how often you are going to get into the gym each week and let us take it from there.

  3. Build the habit. We recommend a minimum of 3 classes per week, so block out the time in your calendar and put yourself first. Making a schedule or exercising at the same time every day is a good way to sustain your routine, and if you are feeling a bit lost you can always talk to one of our friendly coaches.
