CrossFit took the health world by storm and no new fitness program has had quite the impact it did. Whether you’ve seen celebrities swear by it on Instagram, you’ve tried a few classes, or you’re a CrossFit usual, chances are, you’ve heard of it. For those who are new to the game, CrossFit can be perceived as intimidating or may be believed to be a fitness fad, however, we’re here to give you all the reasons why it is neither of these things. After all, the proof is in the pudding so give it a go at Play!
Benefit of CrossFit #1: Convenience
Rather than locking yourself into a membership contract at your local public gym where you’re given the choices of guiding your own exercise or paying extra for a PT, CrossFit Play provides members with the feel of a personal trainer, where well-trained coaches give guided pre-planned workouts. Because CrossFit Play typically serves small groups that train regularly, it is a much more tailored program than trying an online fitness program or workout on your own at the gym. Best of all, the group structure means you get most of the attention of a personal trainer, but at a small percentage of the price.
Benefit of CrossFit #2: Designed to develop strength
Contrary to popular belief (and what deters some people), CrossFit will not instantly give you huge biceps, only as much as you want it to. CrossFit Play guides each member in using the correct lifting techniques and a weight that is suitable for them. Play’s CrossFit programs are designed to help members get toned and get strong, helping with fitness goals, such as weight loss and muscle tone. Lifting weights is often a lot more fun than what you would assume and the results are definitely visible!
Benefit of CrossFit #3: Burns calories and manages weight
CrossFit workouts may help you to burn more calories than you would in other workouts. On average, an 88kg male or 74kg will burn 15 to 18 calories per minute and 13 to 15 calories per minute, respectively, during a CrossFit circuit (Ace Fitness).
Benefit of CrossFit #4: Improves agility, balance and flexibility, as well as aerobic fitness
CrossFit workouts often include functional exercises, or exercises that replicate movements we do in everyday life, some that we don’t even notice. In fitness terms, functional movements include squats, kettlebell swings and overhead presses. All of these movements simultaneously improve balance, flexibility and agility. They have also been proved to reduce risk of injury and to improve your quality of life in the long-term. Also, the high intensity of CrossFit helps to increase VO2 max, referring to the maximum amount of oxygen you can utilise during exercise.
Benefit of CrossFit #5: It’s fun!
A major benefit of CrossFit, and one of the best things about it, is its variety. Play’s workouts are designed to build on existing skills and progression of strength, cardio and flexibility training and we do get creative. Say goodbye to the days of doing the same workouts over and over, or plain old running on a treadmill.
